Yes, the Sp0nge is going abroad. As some of you might know, I just finished school this year. Next step is studying at an university. I was the first class here in Germany to finish school after 12 years - it was 13 regular years before. So I have decided to take a little time off before continueing my education. I've worked a lot this summer and got enough money for my planned trip - I will spend the European winter in Australia!
(There will be mid summer ofc  )
I'm traveling with a long time friend of mine who also just finished school. We will start our trip on 14th of October in Frankfurt with a flight to Dubai, one day visit, then for four days to Singapore. We are scheduled to arrive in Melbourne on 21st of October. The next weeks from then, we will make our first experiences with Australia right in Melbourne, where we are planning to learn how the 'Aussie style of life' works and also get a small job to fill up our travel budget. Then we are facing to rent a camping car and discover Australia's full wonders via the long and beautiful roads. We haven't planned any further, as we assume things will go their own ways anyways

But we are planning to return somewhere next March (~4 months total travel time).

During that time I will ofcourse not be available for you and UrS 24/7. I hope all technical stuff will survive the 4 months of my absence. If not - well, fortunately Australia is not a 3rd world country, I will take the most important backups of the tech stuff with me just for the case ;) But I hope you guys won't leave me and UrS alone for these 4 months because I hope it will be like I was never gone when I return to Germany in March :D

I will use this thread to keep you guys updated about my journey and stay in contact with you, my friends 8-)

Sounds fun: two of my friends did this between high school and university too. One stayed 6 months, the other a full year. They both found work easily at each destination doing fruit picking, or working in kitchens (I think one even did over-the-phone insurance sales for a few months, I remember having a slightly surreal MSN conversation with him while he was at work).

I also remember one of my two friends telling me that at one place where he'd stayed and worked he'd been given free accommodation and food and a small wage for working ridiculously short hours, a couple of hours a day at most, and much of that was spent "messing around". I'm not sure it'll *quite* that easy going during the ongoing global economic mayhem, but no doubt you'll find plenty of opportunities.

Hope you have a great time!

Nice pics Sp0nge! doesn't look quite as scary as I imagined it :D

Hey ATHoS! Welcome to the forums. I'm quite (positively) surprised to see you here! Can't say I'm talking to an UT-Legend every day.

Well Sp0nge, listen to him - and try to not get poisoned, eaten or whatever by whatever may cross your path there

Have fun!
